Norfolk County Register of Deeds William P. O'Donnell to speak at The Walpole Historical Society

Dedham, MA- Norfolk County Register of Deeds William P. O’Donnell will be addressing the Walpole Historical Society on Tuesday, November 12, 2019 at 7:00pm. The meeting will be held at the Walpole Public Library, 143 School Street in Walpole.

The short speaking program will touch on the 225th Anniversary Celebration of Norfolk County in June of 2018.  The Register will speak about the land records of notable people who impacted history in many different and enriching ways, including the four U.S. presidents who were born in the County.  Among its numerous historical attributes, Norfolk County is known as the County of Presidents.

The Register will also speak about the various consumer and high tech initiatives that have taken place at the Registry, including its “History Comes Alive” transcription program.  The initiative, the first in New England by a Registry of Deeds, makes it easier to read the Registry’s approximately 450,000 cursive style documents from the period of 1793-1900 written in quill pen. These land recorded documents have been transcribed into an easy-to-read typed print for online viewing.  The transcription program has received praise from Pulitzer Prize winning historian David McCullough.

Following Register O’Donnell’s remarks, he will be available to answer questions. Furthermore, members of the Register’s staff will be there to provide information about the Massachusetts Homestead Act and the Consumer Notification Service, and to also demonstrate how the Registry’s On- Line Record Database works. Finally, there will be available on-site work stations to check the status of a mortgage discharge or print a copy of your deed. 

This is a community outreach initiative sponsored by the Norfolk County Registry of Deeds. It is Register O’Donnell’s goal to provide a convenient way for residents to learn more about how the Registry serves Norfolk County.  Although Registry staff cannot provide legal advice, they will be able to answer basic questions, provide general information, take a document for recording and assist in filling out a Declaration of Homestead form.
