Gas Tax Amendment Fuels Senate Debate
By now you have undoubtedly noticed the rising price of gasoline here in the Commonwealth, and in fact, across the US. To help people with this unexpected cost, several states, including Georgia, Maryland and most recently Connecticut instituted a gas tax holiday period. During the month of March, debate over instituting a gas tax holiday period took center stage in Massachusetts, leading to passionate remarks, especially in the Senate. “It is fundamentally, from a transportation perspective, ridiculous that we’re using 4,000-pound fossil fuel vehicles to move a chicken sandwich or a bowl of Thai food one or two miles through our very congested city,” he said. “We need to have the right legal frameworks in place at the state level to make it possible for us to set up these programs and to actually try to push for policies that drive towards this shift.”

At the rally in front of the State House Wednesday, advocates pressed for the legislation that would bring Massachusetts in line with 46 other states. Currently e-bikes are categorized as mopeds in Massachusetts.
