We were the first state in marriage, but we’ve been resting on our laurels and not keeping up with some of the pieces we need to.”

Gay, lesbian and transgender mothers and fathers in Massachusetts sometimes have to adopt their own children to ensure parental rights — the consequence of lawmakers’ unwillingness to update last-century parentage laws that leave some families out.
